Fellow materials writers, do you ever truly relax when watching TV or reading for pleasure?

I’ll confess: 99.9% of the time, I end up mentally converting whatever I’m watching or reading into a lesson plan

The lesson I’m sharing today was born from just such a moment. It centres around the reality show The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals, a surprisingly rich resource for an English for Tourism class. It worked beautifully with my learners and might just do the trick for yours too.

The aim? To help students:

  • Recognise key vocabulary related to hotels

  • Use core expressions to describe their dream trips

  • Read and interpret online hotel reviews with a critical eye

  • Practise making polite, effective requests before booking a stay abroad

The activities flow from the show trailer and a vocabulary quiz, through guided discussion and a peek at a real booking website, all the way to a writing task where students draft emails requesting specific hotel facilities.
